The Magic of Joyland Festival 2024

Joyland Festival Jakarta 2024 delivered an unforgettable three-day experience from November 22 to 24 at the GBK Baseball Stadium in Senayan. Drawing a crowd of approximately 45,000 attendees, the festival hosted a stellar lineup of artists from around the globe, curated by Plainsong Live.

The Biggest Moments

One of the festival’s standout performances came from St. Vincent, marking her debut in Jakarta. Despite logistical challenges, including missing equipment, the American musician, whose real name is Anne Erin Clark, delivered an electrifying set filled with choreography, spontaneity, and emotional depth. Songs from her latest album, All Born Screaming, resonated with the audience, especially when she performed New York while crowd-surfing.

Another highlight was AIR, the French duo celebrating the 30th anniversary of their iconic debut album, Moon Safari, by performing it in its entirety. American indie rock band Real Estate also left a lasting impression, captivating fans with hits like Darling.

Global Sounds, Local Legends

Asian acts brought their own flair to the festival. South Korea’s Hyukoh joined forces with Taiwan’s Sunset Rollercoaster to perform tracks from their collaborative album, AAA. Japanese post-rock legends Mono added a colossal soundscape to the event, while Balming Tiger’s alternative K-pop energy was a crowd favorite. The UK’s Bombay Bicycle Club and indie pop group Blueboy brought nostalgia and singalongs, connecting generations of fans.

The Indonesian lineup was equally compelling. Efek Rumah Kaca recreated their Konser Rimpang, featuring their fourth album, Rimpang, enhanced by a visually stunning stage setup. Other local heroes, including The S.I.G.I.T., Sigmun, Maliq & D’Essentials, and The Adams, demonstrated why they remain beloved figures in Indonesia’s music scene.

The Vibrant Lily Pad Stage

The Lily Pad stage transformed into a haven of eclectic music, curated by White Shoes & The Couples Company. Iconic Japanese rock band The 5.6.7.8’s paid homage to fellow Asian pioneers Dara Puspita by covering A Go Go. Psychedelic rock outfit Khun Narin Electric Phin Band from Thailand showcased their unique sound, while Korea’s Idiotape thrilled fans with their fusion of rock and electronic beats.

Indonesian acts also shone brightly on this stage. The Panturas introduced their latest EP, Galura Tropikalia, with tracks in Sundanese, while Teenage Death Star maintained their reputation for delivering chaotic yet exhilarating performances. Emerging talents like Drizzly, The Cottons, and Jessla offered a glimpse into Indonesia’s promising musical future.

Meanwhile, DJ sets from artists such as Habibi Funk and Asa Kusumah kept the energy alive well into the night, turning the festival grounds into a massive dance party.

Beyond Music: Comedy, Film, and Family Fun

For those seeking a break from the music, the Shrooms Garden stage offered a lineup of top comedians, curated by Soleh Solihun. Performers like Nopek Novian, Rigen Rakelna, and Musdalifah Basri had the audience in stitches with their hilarious routines.

Film enthusiasts were treated to a selection of short films curated by acclaimed director Joko Anwar at the Cinerillaz screen. Among the highlights was Accidentally Intentional by Kevin Rahardjo, who is set to direct a feature film adaptation of Legenda Kelam Malin Kundang.

The White Peacock area underwent a significant transformation this year, moving to the GBK Tennis Indoor Stadium. It became a family-friendly zone with activities for children, storytelling sessions by Sal Priadi, and intimate acoustic performances by Maliq & D’Essentials.

A Labor of Love

Organizing a festival of this scale is no small feat. According to Ferry Dermawan, Joyland Festival’s Program Director, every edition is carefully crafted with attendees, performers, and team members in mind. “Each year, we put our hearts into every detail, ensuring a meaningful experience for everyone involved,” he shared.

As the curtain closed on Joyland Festival Jakarta 2024, it left behind cherished memories and anticipation for what lies ahead. It was a celebration of music, art, and connection, firmly establishing its place as a cultural landmark in Indonesia’s event calendar.
